What is an LED display screen?
LED technology is best described as a semi-conductor device which features two terminals that allow the flow of current in one direction only. Thus, the LED acts in the same way as a transistor. When electrical voltage is passed through the LED, light is emitted. The red, green and blue LEDs together form pixel ‘modules’ or ’tiles’ which are arranged to form the viewing surface. This can be used for static advertising but is better utilised as video walls.
How effective are LED displays?
Several studies have shown the effectiveness of LED displays. A 2010 study by Arbitron showed that 70 percent of Americans had seen a digital video display within the previous month. Over half of the respondents recalled seeing a digital display within the past week, and 75 percent within the previous month.
Another study showed that 63 percent more people noticed LED displays compared to the traditional billboard format, demonstrating the power of LED. Yet another study demonstrated that those who interact with outdoor advertising are 17 percent more likely to engage with a brand than those who viewed similar content on their mobile or other device.

What is pixel pitch?
Pixel pitch is the density of the pixels – or LED clusters – on an LED display. It dictates the resolution of the image quality on the LEd screen. Also referred to as dot pitch, or simply pitch, it’s the distance between the centre of one pixel to the centre of the adjacent pixels. As pixel pitch indicates the amount of space between two pixels, the smaller the pitch, the smaller the empty space between pixels. This means higher pixel density and improved LED screen resolution.
Why is pixel pitch important?
Pixel pitch is important because it dictates the optimal viewing distance of your display. The finer the pitch, the smoother the borders and the crisper the image quality. This allows viewers to stand closer to the image without being distracted by being able to see the individual pixels.
While higher pixel density might seem like it must be a good thing whatever your LED display, it may not be suitable for your particular application. It all depends on how close your audience will be when viewing your video wall. Therefore, to judge the required pitch, the optimal viewing distance needs to be ascertained. For example, if your board is designed to be seen from some distance, such as one hung in an arena or large outdoor LED, there is little point in using a very small pixel density as the optimal viewing distance will be some way from the LED display. For interactive touch displays, however, a high pixel pitch is essential for the cleanest, crispest images that really engage the audience.
